As
a player, I have some very specific demands, both in terms of tone and
feel. I like very light weight guitars with good balance.
Tonally, I like a lot of clarity with a strong high end sparkle.
All of our guitars are designed around these concepts. - JS

THE SWAN
is based on a longer-than-normal 27" scale length. Unlike most
long
scale length guitars, the Swan is not a baritone. It was designed
to
be tuned to standard pitch. It has a pair of carbon fiberrods in
the neck to help withstand the added tension that results from the
longer scale length.
Combined
with the chambered (or hollow) body construction of the Swan, the
27-inch scale length produces a remarkable level of clarity, presence,
and articulation that most guitarists have never experienced. When
playing a Swan, the notes just seem to jump off the instrument. The
high end has an added, piano-like sparkle and the low end is tight,
clear and focused, and our guitars seem to play "more in-tune" through
the entire length of the fingerboard.

After seven years of building exclusively Swans, THE GOSLING
is our first guitar with a 25.5" scale length. The objective was
to maintain as much of the clarity and sparkle of the Swan as possible
but add some comfort and familiarity to the design.
Even though we no longer needed the added rigidity to cope with string
tension, I was so convinced that those features were part of the sound
of our guitars that we’ve used them all in the Gosling. Really, the
only differences between a Swan and a Gosling are the scale length and
the corresponding repositioning of the pickups and bridge.
The Gosling does not sound identical to the Swan but it is certainly
closer than any guitar I’ve ever played. The attack is not quite as
fast and no 25.5” guitar can ever have the improved intonation that
comes with the 27” scale length, but all of the sparkle and most of the
clarity are still there.
So while it’s not a Swan, the Gosling is truly still a Soloway.
